The Independence Seaport Museum’s staff and volunteers rowed two wooden whaleboats 17.2 miles up the Delaware River to Edgewater Park, NJ’s Red Dragon Canoe Club. Both whaleboats were built in the Museum’s Workshop on the Water as part of the Seaport’s S.A.I.L.O.R educational program. The Independence Seaport Museum’s two whaleboats left the dock in Philly at the Seaport Museum and arrived at the Red Dragon Canoe Club approximately 7 hours later. -
Lou Gallagher and Astra Haldeman October 27, 2013 (11)
Lou Gallagher and Astra Haldeman, when they were young, learned to sail at the Red Dragon Canoe Club and then became instructors in the club’s non-profit corporation, the Delaware River Sailing School. They both went on to distinguished collegiate careers, but they did not leave sailing behind. When Lou returned from a fellowship in South Africa and Astra completed her fellowship in New Zealand, they moved to Maine, where eventually they would marry. They both got Coast Guard captain’s licenses and they both found jobs – Lou as the captain of various vessels and Astra working in her field of Museum administration. This year, after Lou had spent several summers as skipper of the Friendship Sloop Helen Brooks in Northeast Harbor, ME, Astra joined him as full time first mate. By then, they had moved aboard their own classic, gaff-rigged wooden Tahiti Ketch, living in her cozy confines even through the winter. The sailing school where Astra and Lou met and began their life’s story together is gone now, replaced by a new, community-oriented non-profit corporation, the Shipman Mansion Foundation, whose mission is to preserve the historic Shipman Mansion – the Red Dragon’s home – and to educate the public about the community’s maritime heritage. This fall, Astra and Lou re headed south for the winter aboard the ketch Evelyn. In the next few days, they will sail up the Delaware River to their home town, Florence. First, they will pass the Red Dragon, where their life under sail began. Members of the Red Dragon will be at the club’s waterfront to welcome them home as they sail by and to celebrate the club’s legacy of promoting sailing on the Delaware River and the Shipman Mansion Foundation’s new role in the Edgewater Park community. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/229482351.html -
